Half of the world’s corals are dead. Over 90% are on track to die within decades. These numbers drove Yale graduates Sam Teicher and Gator Halpern to found Coral Vita in 2015, creating the world’s first commercial coral farming for reef restoration operation and proving that saving reefs can work as a business, not just a cause.

Coral reefs support 25% of marine life and one billion livelihoods while generating $2.7 trillion annually in goods and services. Yet rising ocean temperatures, acidification, pollution, and coastal development destroy reef systems faster than nature can rebuild them. Traditional restoration involved growing corals underwater at natural rates ranging from less than one centimeter to ten centimeters per year.

Coral Vita reimagined this approach entirely. Rather than growing corals in the ocean, the company built land-based aquaculture facilities where controlled tank environments enable far greater precision over water temperature, chemistry, and light conditions. This control enables commercial coral farming for reef restoration at scales and speeds that are unattainable in open-ocean nurseries.

Two scientific breakthroughs power the operation. Microfragmentation, pioneered by Dr. David Vaughan, involves cutting corals into tiny pieces that heal and grow simultaneously, accelerating growth by up to 50 times the natural rate. Assisted evolution, developed by the late Dr. Ruth Gates, exposes corals to gradually increasing temperatures and acidity, training them to withstand warming ocean conditions they will face once transplanted onto reefs.

Combined, these techniques produce diverse, climate-resilient corals in months instead of decades. Coral Vita cultivates over 52 species, maintaining genetic diversity critical for ecosystem health. The company works with many parent colonies and supports coral spawning, creating entirely new genetic combinations rather than relying on clones from limited sources.

The company launched its pilot farm in Freeport, Grand Bahama, in 2019. Months later, Hurricane Dorian’s record-breaking storm surge destroyed the facility. Rather than retreating, the experience strengthened the founders’ resolve and demonstrated exactly why commercial coral farming for reef restoration matters—climate change is actively destroying the ecosystems these corals inhabit.

After rebuilding through Hurricane Dorian and COVID-19 lockdowns, Coral Vita cultivated over 100,000 corals across 52 species in the Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Some restoration areas saw fish populations double compared with pre-restoration surveys, and coral survival rates reached up to 99%.

The for-profit model distinguishes Coral Vita’s approach to commercial coral farming for reef restoration from traditional conservation. Rather than depending solely on grants, the company generates revenue through restoration-as-a-service contracts, allowing governments and developers to regenerate reefs. Licensed technology enables other organizations to scale restoration using Coral Vita’s proprietary systems. Coral relocation services support developers during coastal construction projects.

BrainCoral, the company’s proprietary technology platform named to TIME’s Best Inventions list in 2025, combines sensors, hardware, and AI-driven software to optimize growth conditions and monitor survival rates. The platform transforms commercial coral farming for reef restoration from an artisanal practice into a data-driven industry capable of improving economics at scale.

The approach earned significant recognition. Coral Vita won Prince William’s inaugural Earthshot Prize in 2021 for the Revive Our Oceans category, receiving £1 million to scale operations. The company secured an $8 million Series A funding round led by Builders Vision. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) recognized Coral Vita as a Climate Champion, and co-founder Teicher was honored by the BBC alongside Prince William.

Teicher previously implemented climate resiliency initiatives at the White House and the Global Island Partnership, launched a United Nations-funded coral farm, and contributed as an author to Sustainable Development Goal 14. Halpern manages operations, contracts, and financial modeling. Both knew since their teenage years that they wanted to devote their lives to the environmental movement, meeting at Yale’s School of the Environment, where their complementary skills shaped the company.

The vision extends far beyond the Bahamas. More than 100 countries contain coral reefs, and Coral Vita envisions large-scale commercial coral farming for reef restoration facilities in every one. The vertically integrated farm model creates eco-tourism attractions alongside restoration operations. Visitors can book tours of the Grand Bahama facility or adopt individual corals, creating personal connections to restoration work while generating revenue supporting operations.

Scaling requires cross-sector partnerships. Coral Vita builds relationships with governments, developers, tourism operators, and scientific institutions. Consulting services help partners achieve their own restoration goals, creating multiplier effects beyond what any single organization could accomplish alone.

The urgency remains stark. Since 1970, more than 30% of the world’s coral reefs have died. Current warming trajectories threaten over 90% within the coming decades. Each year of delay means more reef loss, exponentially harder to reverse. Coral reefs occur in more than 100 nations and territories, meaning the crisis threatens marine biodiversity and coastal economies worldwide.

Coral Vita’s founders acknowledge a painful irony. “Our jobs shouldn’t exist,” the company states. “But we refuse to let coral reefs die on our watch.” That pragmatism defines commercial coral farming for reef restoration, accepting the crisis while building systems capable of responding at the scale the oceans demand, one resilient coral at a time.

  1. A clarification about the origin of coral “micro fragmentation”. “Microcolonies” we’re first developed at the Observatoire Oceanologique European in Monaco during the 1990’s. After learning their techniques, I began culturing corals, including microcolonies, first at the University of South Alabama, then set up more extensive coral culture facilities in the Florida Keys for Mote Marine Laboratory. I received NSF funding in the late 90’s specifically to look at developing coral culture for reef restoration. A key part of that work was looking at how small coral fragments would be viable. Dave Vaughan succeeded me as Director of that lab and expanded the coral culture efforts.
