Orangutan mothers arranging playdates travel farther and eat less to give their offspring social play opportunities, according to 15 years of data from wild Bornean orangutans.
Bornean orangutans live largely alone, with adult females spending most of their time in the company of only their single dependent offspring. Unlike chimpanzees or bonobos that travel in flexible groups, orangutan mothers occupy separate but overlapping home ranges, encountering neighbors only occasionally and briefly. This solitary lifestyle poses a puzzle: how do orangutan infants, who typically have no siblings because interbirth intervals average 7.6 years, ever get opportunities to play with peers?
Researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, University of Zurich, and collaborating institutions analyzed roughly 30,000 observation hours collected over 15 years from 31 mother-offspring pairs at Tuanan Research Station in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Their findings, published as a preprint on bioRxiv, provide the first strong evidence that orangutan mothers arranging playdates actively shape their offspring’s social opportunities rather than leaving encounters to chance.
The data revealed that neighboring mothers with similarly aged offspring shared space far more intensively than expected, independent of how closely related the mothers were or how much fruit was available in the forest. Crucially, this intensified overlap occurred within existing home range boundaries rather than through mothers expanding or shifting their territories, meaning that orangutan mothers arranging playdates fine-tune where they spend time within familiar areas specifically to increase the likelihood of encounters with compatible playmates.
Infant pairs closer in age played together significantly more often. This effect persisted even after accounting for maternal relatedness, suggesting that offspring age similarity itself drives association patterns beyond simple kinship ties. However, the research also found that some baseline familiarity among mothers was necessary; offspring of females with no related neighbors were rarely observed engaging in peer play.

On days when infant play occurred, mothers traveled measurably farther and spent less time feeding compared to ordinary days spent alone with their offspring. These costs exceeded what could be explained by simple association with another adult; play days specifically, not just proximity to other orangutans, drove the steepest increases in travel and steepest declines in feeding time.
Perhaps most striking, the pattern extended across multiple days rather than occurring only during the play event itself. Mothers traveled farther on the day before a play encounter, with movement directed specifically toward the play partner’s core range area. Afterward, mothers redirected their travel back toward their home-range core. This directional, multi-day pattern strongly suggests that orangutan mothers arranging playdates do so deliberately rather than through opportunistic encounters during routine foraging.
These findings reveal that orangutan mothers incorporate their infants’ social needs into daily ranging decisions, at a cost to their own energy budgets, the research team explained. Given that orangutans have among the lowest metabolic rates of any mammal and the longest interbirth intervals of any terrestrial animal, even modest increases in daily energy expenditure carry meaningful consequences for maternal energy balance and future reproductive timing.
The behavior contrasts sharply with how other solitary or semi-solitary species provide play opportunities for offspring. Brown bear cubs from different families play when mothers happen to converge at concentrated food sources like salmon streams, making play essentially a byproduct of shared foraging rather than deliberate social facilitation. Giraffe calves gather in communal nursery groups while mothers forage separately elsewhere. In these systems, mothers often receive some direct benefit from association, such as reduced predation risk.
Orangutan mothers arranging playdates appear to gain no comparable direct benefit. Female orangutans don’t groom each other or form alliances the way many group-living primates do. Research has shown that associations between orangutan mothers can actually be costly, reducing feeding efficiency and increasing physiological stress. Yet mothers pursue these costly encounters anyway, which is best explained by their offspring’s developmental needs rather than by any advantage to themselves.
Social play is increasingly recognized as important across the animal kingdom, strengthening social skills and emotional regulation, honing motor and competitive abilities, and preparing juveniles to respond flexibly to unpredictable challenges. In several wild mammal populations, early-life social play has been linked to improved survival and reproductive success later in life. Juvenile feral horses that play more show better body condition and higher survival. Brown bear and bottlenose dolphin juveniles that engage in more play show longer survival or greater reproductive success as adults.
The findings challenge assumptions about what solitary living actually requires. Rather than suggesting reduced social needs, the research indicates that solitary species may simply shift the burden of meeting developmental social needs onto mothers, who must expend extra energy and cognitive effort to create opportunities that would arise automatically in group-living species. Whether the short-term costs orangutan mothers bear translate into long-term benefits for their offspring through improved social competence, survival, or eventual reproductive success remains a question only long-term field studies can answer.
For now, orangutan mothers arranging playdates stand as compelling evidence that even at the solitary extreme of mammalian social organization, the developmental importance of early friendship persists, requiring dedicated parental effort to satisfy needs that social species meet as a simple byproduct of daily life.
