Geoversity builds biocultural leadership for conservation through immersive programs in Panama that train emerging leaders alongside Indigenous communities and world-class scientists.

In December 2000, Nathan Gray traveled to Panama at the urging of Guna environmental leader Guillermo Archibald. The Head Chief of the Guna General Congress invited Gray’s youth organization, Earth Train, to establish a base enabling collaboration with Indigenous communities. Gray found a degraded cattle ranch in the upper Mamoní Valley watershed and began reforesting 80 hectares with native plants and trees. Streams cleared. Wildlife returned. Three decades later, that ranch became the more than 2,000-hectare Mamoní Valley Preserve, Geoversity‘s world campus for biocultural leadership for conservation.

The preserve sits within the largest remaining contiguous tropical rainforest in the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena ecoregion, ranked among the world’s top 25 biodiversity hotspots. It borders the Guna Yala Indigenous territory, Emberá communities, and Chagres National Park. For millions of migrating birds and threatened species, including tapir, four feline species, and five primate species, the valley serves as a critical biological corridor linking the Americas. Remarkably, this ecological treasure lies just two hours from Panama City’s international airport.

Biocultural leadership for conservation represents Geoversity’s core philosophy: biological diversity and cultural diversity are inseparable, and protecting one requires honoring the other. Programs integrate applied science, natural design, and Indigenous wisdom rather than treating these as competing knowledge systems. Students don’t just learn about conservation; they live it through watershed protection, reforestation, species monitoring, and community engagement.

Centro Mamoní, the preserve’s off-grid research station, anchors the learning experience. Hand-crafted cabañas built from locally salvaged hardwoods and bamboo, powered by hydroelectric and solar systems, demonstrate that human habitation and forest conservation can coexist. The Bamboo Ark Pavilion, constructed from on-site-grown bamboo, showcases natural building materials as alternatives to extraction-based construction.

The School of Biocultural Leadership, co-founded with young Lakota leader Micaela Iron Shell-Dominguez, offers GeoYear programs combining exploration, team building, and experiential learning across semesters. Students travel by sailboat, kayak, mountain bike, and on foot through Panama’s ecosystems, from the Pacific coast to the continental divide to the Atlantic islands, gaining an understanding of interconnected landscapes through direct experience rather than classroom abstraction.

Biocultural leadership for conservation at Geoversity extends through partnerships with institutions that would seem unlikely collaborators in conventional settings. Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots held a five-day Americas leadership conference at Centro Mamoní. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute conducts endangered species reintroduction in the preserve, releasing Limosa Harlequin frogs, a priority species facing extreme risk of extinction, in multiple trials. Harvard’s Natural History Project conducts a biodiversity inventory. Kaminando’s jaguar research identified seven resident jaguars within the preserve’s landscape systems.

Indigenous collaboration remains foundational. The Guna Youth Congress co-leads programs connecting traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary conservation science. Emberá communities participate in pilot projects on non-carbon benefits through EUROCLIMA+. Rather than treating Indigenous peoples as subjects of conservation, Geoversity positions them as co-creators of biocultural leadership for conservation, sharing authority over programs, expeditions, and research conducted within and adjacent to their territories.

Conservation outcomes from three decades of work are substantial. Geoversity reforested 132 hectares directly and influenced restoration on an additional 600 hectares, planting over 100,000 native trees. Forest cover increases approximately 0.5% annually. The preserve has avoided more than 650,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from deforestation. Community members from Guna, Emberá, and mestizo backgrounds participate in a bamboo value chain spanning reforestation through construction of modular structures.

Executive education programs bring business leaders into the field alongside conservation scientists and Indigenous communities. The Nature of Business program, directed by Fortune magazine editors and Harvard’s Technology and Entrepreneur Center, immerses CEOs and entrepreneurs in nature-based learning, demonstrating practical insights from ecosystems applicable to business sustainability.

Biocultural leadership for conservation recently gained new momentum with Harvard-MIT professor Jeff Karp stepping into the role of Executive President. With a track record of 14 startups, $650 million raised, and bioinspired innovations, Karp brings entrepreneurial capacity to scaling Geoversity’s mission. His book on intercepting societal algorithms and awakening consciousness aligns with the organization’s vision of shifting humanity’s relationship with nature.

Geoversity expanded beyond Panama through its Atlantic Marine Field Station in the Azores, Portugal, and the Geoversity Ocean Centre at Seahorse Point in Bocas del Toro. A Biocultural Design Center next to Frank Gehry’s Biomuseo in Panama City connects urban audiences with natural design innovation. The ecosystem approach, with multiple campuses, programs, and partners reinforcing one another, mirrors the biological systems that Geoversity studies and protects.

Gray’s journey to Geoversity followed an unconventional path. As a staff founder of Oxfam America, supporting community development leadership in low-income countries and a pioneer in socially positive investment, he launched Earth Train in 1991 with youth leaders. Sweden’s Claes Nobel formally launched the organization during his Earth Prize ceremony at the UN General Assembly before 2,000 leaders. That youth-empowerment DNA persists in every Geoversity program.

Where streams run dry, watersheds feed springs that reach communities downstream. Where youth once lacked pathways to environmental leadership, a school trains biocultural leaders from ten countries who carry knowledge into their own communities worldwide. Geoversity proves that places and people heal together when given commitment, time, and leadership grounded in both science and Indigenous wisdom.
