Restoring the Bat Nectar Corridor for Threatened Migratory Bats

Restoring the bat nectar corridor between Mexico and the U.S. Southwest has covered 5,886 hectares and planted over 185,000 agaves since 2018.

Restoring the bat nectar corridor addresses a precise ecological dependency. Three species of nectar-feeding bats, including the endangered Mexican long-nosed bat, rely on a 1,200-kilometer chain of flowering agaves to fuel their annual migration between central Mexico and the U.S. Southwest. Pregnant females make the journey each spring to give birth, and in return for the nectar, they pollinate the agaves, propagating the very plants sustaining their migration. Break the chain of flowering plants anywhere along the route, and the bats have nowhere to refuel.

The Mexican long-nosed bat has declined roughly 50 percent over recent decades and was added to the endangered species list in 1988. Bat Conservation International launched the Agave Restoration Initiative in 2018 in partnership with the Northeast Mexico Agave Restoration Network, a coalition spanning nonprofits, ejido communities, private ranchers, government agencies, companies, and universities. Kristen Lear directs the effort, calling agaves “keystone” plants whose ecological, economic, and cultural value extends well beyond the bats themselves.

The restoration model runs through 26 nurseries that propagate agave alongside vegetables and medicinal plants for local communities, folding conservation into rural livelihoods rather than treating them as separate goals. Fifteen long-term agreements with Mexican ejidos govern degraded land along the corridor, with agaves left undisturbed specifically to flower, a process that itself can take up to ten years per plant.

That decade-long flowering timeline is the initiative’s central constraint. Restoring the bat nectar corridor isn’t simply a matter of planting enough agaves; it’s a matter of waiting for them to mature into food sources while an endangered species with a shrinking population needs functioning habitat now. Every agave planted this year won’t provide nectar until the mid-2030s at the earliest. The bats’ survival calculus and the agaves’ biological clock are running on fundamentally different timescales.

Does restoring the bat nectar corridor show signs of working despite the lag? Recent evidence suggests a cautious yes. Environmental DNA sampling and community science networks recently detected Mexican long-nosed bats in a new state and documented a roughly 160-kilometer northward range shift. Researchers in New Mexico’s Bootheel region link the shift to drought-reducing agave flowering in traditional habitat, pushing bats to search farther north where agaves are less drought-stressed. Traveling an additional 30 miles can add a full night to a bat’s migratory journey, a real energetic cost for an animal already operating near its physiological limits.

The related lesser long-nosed bat offers a genuine precedent for what’s possible. That species grew from roughly 1,000 known individuals in 1988 to an estimated 200,000 by 2024, following legal protection of its roosting caves. That recovery took 36 years and required roost protection as much as habitat restoration, a reminder that agave planting alone won’t save the Mexican long-nosed bat without complementary protections against poaching, cave disturbance, and habitat loss.

Threats to the corridor persist alongside restoration efforts. The rising popularity of bacanora, a Sonoran distilled spirit similar to tequila and mezcal, has reduced the number of wild agaves reaching flowering age as producers harvest plants before bats can feed on them. Urban development in Arizona and Sonora continues to remove agave habitat even as restoration crews plant new stands elsewhere along the same corridor.

What does success look like by the initiative’s own measure? The 2030 goal is 500,000 agaves planted and 95,000 hectares restored and protected, more than fifteen times the current restored footprint. At 5,886 hectares and 185,000 agaves, roughly eight years into the effort, reaching that target requires accelerating both metrics substantially in the remaining years, even as each newly planted agave still needs a decade before it can feed a single bat.

More than 100 partners now participate in DNA sampling and agave patch surveys, helping researchers target planting toward areas bats are actually using rather than guessing at corridor gaps. That targeting matters more than raw hectare counts, since a scattered nectar source hundreds of kilometers from where bats forage provides little benefit, regardless of how many agaves it contains.

Restoring the bat nectar corridor represents a rare conservation effort explicitly designed around a single migratory species‘ precise nutritional geography, a landscape-scale collaboration spanning an international border and dozens of rural communities. Whether it succeeds depends less on the total number of agaves planted than on whether enough of today’s plantings mature into flowering habitat before the Mexican long-nosed bat’s remaining population runs out of time.
