A farmer whose husband has worked the same land since 1985 describes how climate-resilient farming in Panama helped her family survive shifting seasons and shrinking water supplies.
For decades, seasons in Panama’s highlands followed predictable rhythms. A coffee farmer who arrived on her family’s finca (farm) 34 years ago recalls how distinct wet and dry periods once structured the agricultural calendar throughout the tropical region. That predictability has vanished. Summer conditions and rainfall now arrive at unpredictable moments throughout the year, sending coffee plants into what growers describe as a kind of climate shock, flowering erratically and struggling against disease.
Climate-resilient farming in Panama emerged as a response to mounting stress on small producers across the country. Farmers describe watching crops fail season after season, leading to genuine discouragement about continuing agricultural production altogether. Increased leaf drop and other plant diseases linked to shifting weather patterns compound the challenge. The sun feels hotter each year, water grows scarcer, and livestock increasingly suffer under extreme heat.
Water security emerged as the critical factor determining whether farmers could adapt. Recognizing this, the Adaptation Fund partnered with Fundación Natura to implement climate-resilient farming across coffee-growing highlands and cattle ranching communities within the Santa María watershed. The project has directly impacted more than 114,000 people, restored 600 hectares of vital ecosystems, and strengthened climate protection across 20 communities.

For coffee producers, climate-resilient farming meant fundamentally restructuring how farms operated. Growers received more resilient coffee varieties, including Catuai SH3 and Marsellesa, selected specifically for their ability to protect water sources and soil health under changing conditions. Farmers also eliminated glyphosate and other agrochemicals entirely, monitoring results as the transition unfolded.
Within roughly two years, farmers began establishing tree-lined corridors and vegetative strips across their land. These agroforestry practices integrated shade trees alongside coffee plants while protecting streams and water sources running through farm properties. Farmers also introduced sugarcane and búchon de oro, a nitrogen-fixing plant valued for its high protein content and ability to help livestock withstand harsh summer conditions.
Climate-resilient farming in Panama extended into silvopastoral systems for cattle ranchers. Producers began cultivating forage crops sustaining livestock through increasingly severe dry seasons, while deliberately leaving trees standing along stream banks to maintain water flow through the watershed. Results validated the approach quickly. During a particularly intense dry season, one rancher described maintaining feed for roughly 60 head of cattle, compared to just 20 before implementing these changes.
The transformation extended beyond individual farms into family and community bonds. One coffee grower described the project as fundamentally a family endeavor, with relatives involved from the initial planting through ongoing cultivation. Over time, that shared work deepened into genuine investment in the land and its future. The family’s improved Marsellesa and Catuai harvests, prized for their exceptional flavor profile, eventually inspired them to launch their own coffee brand, Panamayas Cofi, built collectively as a family project.
Climate-resilient farming generates benefits extending well beyond any single farm. Producers who adopted these practices have since shared their adaptation knowledge with other growers, both within their immediate communities and beyond, spreading proven techniques organically through farmer-to-farmer knowledge transfer rather than top-down instruction alone.
The Santa María watershed initiative demonstrates how integrated approaches, combining water management, resilient crop varieties, agroforestry, and sustainable livestock practices, can rebuild agricultural resilience from the ground up. Rather than treating water scarcity, crop failure, and livestock stress as separate problems, climate-resilient farming addressed them as interconnected challenges requiring coordinated solutions across an entire watershed.
For families who watched their livelihoods threatened by unpredictable seasons, disappearing water, and struggling crops, this Adaptation Fund and Fundación Natura partnership offered something increasingly rare: proof that agricultural communities can adapt fast enough to keep pace with a changing climate, provided they receive the right varieties, techniques, and support at the right time. What began as individual farm interventions has grown into a model other communities across Panama continue to replicate.
