After years of poaching left a small group of 12 gorillas fearful and defensive, a patient, long-term effort has shown that even deeply traumatized animals can shift their behavior. A study published in the African Journal of Ecology in April 2026 documents exactly how that shift happened and what it means for the species’ future.
Poaching, the illegal hunting and killing of wildlife, had taken a serious toll on these gorillas long before researchers arrived. The animals were skittish and reacted to approaching humans with fear or outright aggression. Getting close enough to study them, let alone protect them, seemed like a distant goal.
Researchers backed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the global conservation organization, began tracking the gorilla group from a distance starting in 2011. For the first three years, the team simply observed from afar, learning the gorillas’ movements and habits without trying to close the gap. The group included one adult male, several adult females, and a mix of younger animals ranging from infants to subadults.
In 2015, scientists and local trackers began deliberately moving closer, making soft sounds such as tongue clicks or finger snaps to signal their presence without startling the animals. Once spotted, the team would mimic gorilla feeding behavior and remain calm and still. The goal was straightforward: show the gorillas that not all humans pose a threat, and begin the slow work of gorillas learning to trust humans again.
The early results were discouraging. In the first years of direct contact, the gorillas reacted with aggression nearly 30% of the time, and with fear more than 30% of the time. Curiosity and indifference were rare. By 2022, seven years after the closer-approach work began, those patterns had reversed. This process is called habituation, meaning the gradual reduction of fear responses through repeated, non-threatening exposure. Researchers working in other protected areas in Africa found that gorillas without a history of trauma could reach acceptance in as little as 28 months. Signs of poaching activity in the area, including gunshots heard, bullet casings found, and poacher campsites discovered, dropped by roughly 50% between 2015 and 2022. Researchers noted that this decline likely reflected both their daily presence and an increase in anti-poaching patrols. When researchers and local trackers are regularly on the ground, it raises the perceived risk for poachers and builds community awareness.
