From Climate Literacy to Climate Action: Building Education and Green Career Pathways

Climate literacy is climate justice, but knowledge alone isn’t enough. Here’s how to transform information into real skills, experience, and action throughout a learner’s education. 

In my previous article, I framed climate literacy as a form of climate justice: knowledge determines who can understand climate risks, participate in decisions, and protect their future. The natural next question is one of implementation. How do we move climate literacy beyond information and turn it into skills, experience and meaningful action across a learner’s entire educational journey?

For me, the answer begins with mentorship.

Through my work as a sustainability consultant and through mentorship programs such as the United Nations Association in Canada’s Building Young Professionals program, I have supported young people exploring climate-action careers, professional networks and leadership pathways. As a mentor with PRME, I currently work with academics and educators integrating sustainability, ESG, climate ethics, governance, and climate finance into higher education. As a mentor with the Canadian Association for Girls in Science (CAGIS), I also support girls and young women pursuing careers in STEM, helping them see clear pathways into environmental stewardship and sustainability leadership.

These experiences have taught me the same lesson from different angles: information alone rarely changes a life. A mentor helps a learner connect an existing interest, whether in nature, engineering, business, communications, or public policy, to a real, navigable pathway.

Mentoring through professional platforms extends that reach further. LinkedIn conversations, live webinars, workshops, and online career discussions widen access, particularly for students who do not already have sustainability professionals in their personal networks. Podcasts and other forms of climate communication add another layer, making professional journeys visible and demonstrating that there is no single route into climate work.

Climate and sustainability education should begin in kindergarten and continue through primary, junior secondary, higher secondary, college and university, with content matched to each stage of development. Young children can learn about care, interdependence, and respect for nature through rain gardens, water conservation, and waste sorting. Older students can study climate science, biodiversity, the circular economy, climate justice and local resilience, including disaster risk reduction, given the growing frequency and severity of extreme weather events worldwide. At the postsecondary level, learners can examine corporate ESG strategies, global clean-energy projects, sustainable infrastructure, climate finance, governance and sector-specific solutions.

This cannot remain an occasional Earth Day activity. Every education system needs a clear, age-appropriate climate-literacy curriculum integrated across science, social studies, economics, engineering, business, arts and communications. Sustainability is not a niche profession. ESG principles and climate risks increasingly touch every field, from agriculture and healthcare to finance, construction, technology, public administration and equitable access to education.

The gap remains substantial. An analysis by UNESCO of curricula across 76 countries found that climate-change content reached only 21 percent of the maximum possible score, while biodiversity content reached just 12 percent. At the same time, the Planetary Health Check 2025 reports that seven of nine planetary boundaries have now been breached. Education can no longer treat planetary stability as an elective topic. It is a foundation for informed citizenship and social progress.

Students should not only learn about sustainability. They should help implement it. Schools, colleges and universities can become living laboratories where learners begin by auditing their personal energy and water use, monitoring biodiversity, mapping heat and flood risks, proposing measurable improvements and calculating their household carbon footprint alongside practical ways to reduce it.

Projects can be scaled according to age, resources and location. Primary students might maintain pollinator gardens or measure food waste. Secondary students could design rainwater-harvesting systems, test low-impact development approaches, study stormwater management, monitor solar generation or model a small smart-grid project. Larger postsecondary campuses could support sustainable agricultural practices, foundational aquaculture projects, composting, green roofs, bioswales and renewable-energy pilots. Climate simulations such as En-ROADS and C-ROADS can help older students test policy choices, understand interconnected systems and recognize the trade-offs behind climate decisions.

This is already achievable. Singapore’s school sustainability programme has introduced solar panels, energy-efficiency measures and practical environmental projects across its schools. According to the Singapore Ministry of Education’s School Green Awards, Greenwood Primary School’s rainwater-harvesting system saved more than 4,500 litres of water, while its food-waste digester reduced food waste by 15 kilograms. Such projects transform school infrastructure into teaching material and show students that climate solutions can be practical, local and measurable.

The next step is creating a structured bridge to work. Industry professionals should be invited into schools, colleges and universities as mentors, guest educators and project advisers. Governments, municipalities, businesses, NGOs, research institutions and community organizations can offer internships, apprenticeships, job-shadowing and challenge-based projects.

The International Labour Organization’s work on skills for green jobs emphasizes the importance of equipping people with the knowledge and competencies required for green employment while fostering innovation and sustainability across existing occupations. Green skills are therefore needed not only for new environmental roles but also for making established jobs, industries and institutions more sustainable and efficient.

Career mentoring should begin before university. Students deserve early exposure to the full range of climate-related roles available to them, including engineering, urban planning, sustainable finance, environmental law, communications, skilled trades, agriculture, data analysis and community development. A student should not have to wait until graduation to discover that their discipline has a climate dimension.

My own mentoring, advocacy, workshops, simulations, writing and podcast participation have reinforced one lesson: people act when knowledge is connected to purpose, relationships and opportunity. A strong mentor can help a student identify transferable skills, find credible training, build confidence and enter professional networks. But mentorship must be embedded institutionally, not left to chance.

The model is straightforward: teach climate literacy at every level, practise sustainability on every campus, connect learners with mentors, and build pathways into applied projects and green careers. This advances SDG 4 on Quality Education, SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 13 on Climate Action and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.

Climate education should help young people move from awareness to agency. When students can learn, simulate, build, measure, communicate, and receive guidance from experienced professionals, climate literacy becomes more than knowledge. It becomes a lifelong capacity to shape a safer, fairer and more sustainable world.
