Climate change is often framed as a technological, policy, or economic challenge. Yet beneath all of these lies a less visible but equally consequential reality: climate change is also a literacy challenge.
The success of the global sustainability transition will depend not only on the solutions we develop but on our collective ability to understand, evaluate, and implement them.
Around the world, governments, businesses, educators, and communities are making decisions that will shape energy systems, infrastructure, economies, public health, and societal resilience for decades to come. Yet these decisions are often made amid misinformation, fragmented knowledge, and unequal access to credible learning opportunities. When people lack the knowledge and capacity to navigate complex sustainability challenges, even the most ambitious climate policies and technological innovations can fall short of their potential.
Climate literacy is therefore more than an educational objective; it is a climate justice imperative.
As UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development Roadmap recognizes, equipping individuals and communities with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to participate in decision-making serves as a critical bridge between quality education and climate action, helping to build more informed, resilient, and equitable societies.
Climate justice recognizes that the impacts of climate change are not experienced equally. As the IPCC’s Climate Change 2023 Synthesis Report affirms, communities that have contributed the least to global emissions often face the greatest risks and have the fewest resources to adapt. Women, youth, Indigenous Peoples, and many communities across the Global South remain disproportionately vulnerable. Addressing these inequities requires more than technology, finance, or policy reform. It requires knowledge, skills, capacity building, and meaningful participation, precisely what the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) framework calls for.
Throughout my sustainability journey, I have come to recognize that one of the greatest barriers to climate action is often not a lack of solutions, but a lack of accessible knowledge and informed engagement. Education has the power to transform awareness into action and empower communities to become active participants in shaping a more resilient and sustainable future.
Around the world, compelling examples demonstrate how climate education and capacity building can translate knowledge into resilience, leadership, and community-led action.
Consider what is happening in Maharashtra, India. Swayam Shikshan Prayog’s (SSP) Women-Led Climate Resilient Farming (WCRF) model is empowering marginalized women in drought-prone regions by repositioning them from agricultural laborers to farmers, decision-makers, and climate leaders. Developed in response to recurring droughts and increasing agricultural vulnerability, the model builds women’s capacity in sustainable agriculture, water conservation, diversified farming systems, and climate adaptation practices.
Rather than focusing solely on water-intensive cash crops, women are supported in cultivating locally appropriate and nutrition-sensitive food crops that strengthen household resilience, food security, and income stability. The model promotes organic farming methods, efficient water-use techniques, soil restoration practices, and community-based knowledge sharing. Women are organized into producer groups and local collectives that strengthen leadership, improve market access, and facilitate peer-to-peer learning.

The results have been significant. SSP reports that participating farmers have achieved average crop yield increases of approximately 25 percent while reducing cultivation costs by relying less on chemical inputs and adopting more diversified agricultural systems. As the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs highlighted, the initiative has empowered more than 41,000 women and has gained national and international recognition as a scalable model for climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and women’s leadership in agriculture.
A similarly powerful example can be found in coastal Bangladesh. In Chattogram and Banshkhali, areas acutely exposed to salinity intrusion, flooding, cyclones, and other climate-related risks, a youth-led initiative called Aware With Us, developed by BANGLALEADS, is helping strengthen climate literacy and environmental resilience among students and local communities. Recognized by UNESCO’s SDG4 Education 2030 platform, the initiative uses an innovative edutainment approach that combines films, interactive learning activities, environmental stewardship projects, and peer-to-peer engagement. By weaving together climate education, community engagement, and youth leadership, the initiative demonstrates how locally grounded learning can strengthen resilience from the community level upward.
These are not simply inspiring examples. They are evidence that investing in climate literacy delivers tangible social, environmental, and developmental outcomes.
Climate literacy extends beyond understanding climate science; it is the capacity to translate knowledge into informed decisions and meaningful action. This principle is reflected in initiatives such as The Carbon Literacy Project, which emphasizes understanding the carbon impacts of everyday decisions while empowering individuals and organizations to reduce emissions through practical, measurable actions.
At a time when misinformation and disinformation continue to distort public understanding of climate risks, evidence-based learning is more important than ever. Experiential tools such as En-ROADS, developed by Climate Interactive and MIT Sloan, further strengthen this process by allowing participants to explore the interconnected impacts of policy choices, energy transitions, economic outcomes, and global temperature trajectories. These simulations reinforce a fundamental reality: there is no single solution to climate change. Meaningful progress requires integrated action across technology, policy, infrastructure, behavior, governance, and finance.
Most importantly, such approaches cultivate systems thinking and responsible leadership, the very qualities that the UN Global Compact’s Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) seek to embed across business schools and leadership institutions worldwide.
Climate literacy must move beyond environmental studies and become a core competency across business, finance, engineering, public policy, healthcare, and leadership education. Universities, professional institutions, employers, and training organizations all have a critical role in preparing current and future leaders for sustainability transitions. The same applies to professionals, policymakers, and community leaders already in the workforce.
Ultimately, climate literacy is a lifelong capacity-building journey. It develops responsible leaders who can navigate complexity, evaluate evidence, engage diverse stakeholders, and make informed decisions that balance environmental, social, and economic priorities.
As we move toward 2030 and beyond, as envisioned by the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the success of the sustainability transition will be shaped not only by the technologies we deploy or the policies we enact, but by the people we empower.
Climate justice begins with access to knowledge. Education builds understanding. Understanding builds capacity. Capacity enables participation. Participation creates lasting change.
By investing in climate literacy, we invest in informed leadership, resilient communities, and the collective capacity needed to build a more equitable, sustainable, and climate-resilient future.
