A major freshwater mussel habitat protection effort will safeguard 3,814 river miles across 17 states, helping four endangered mussel species recover while supporting healthier waterways.
Freshwater mussels rarely receive the same attention as wolves, eagles, or whales, yet they play a vital role in maintaining healthy rivers and streams. Often called the “livers of the river,” these remarkable animals filter water, stabilize riverbeds, and support aquatic ecosystems that benefit countless other species. Now, one of the largest freshwater mussel habitat protection efforts in recent years is providing new safeguards for some of North America’s most endangered mussels.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has designated approximately 3,814 river miles of critical habitat across 17 states for four endangered freshwater mussel species: the rayed bean, sheepnose, snuffbox, and spectaclecase. The designation spans waterways in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The freshwater mussel habitat protection designation is intended to support the long-term recovery of species that have experienced dramatic declines over the past century. All four mussel species were listed as endangered in 2012 after habitat loss, pollution, dam construction, channel modifications, and invasive species caused populations to shrink across much of their historic range.

Although often overlooked, freshwater mussels provide essential ecosystem services. A single mussel can filter gallons of water each day, removing algae, sediment, and other particles from rivers and streams. Healthy mussel populations improve water quality, help cycle nutrients, and create conditions that benefit fish, insects, and other aquatic life. Their presence is often considered a sign of a healthy river ecosystem.
The new freshwater mussel habitat protection measures do not create wildlife reserves or prevent private landowners from using their property. Instead, the designation primarily affects projects involving federal agencies, permits, or funding. When federal actions are proposed within designated habitat areas, agencies must ensure those activities do not destroy or adversely modify the habitats essential to the mussels’ survival and recovery.
Scientists consider habitat protection one of the most important tools for recovering endangered mussel species. Unlike many animals, freshwater mussels cannot easily relocate when conditions deteriorate. They depend on clean, flowing water and stable riverbeds to survive. Changes in water quality, excessive sedimentation, altered river flows, or habitat fragmentation can have severe consequences for populations that are already vulnerable.
The freshwater mussel habitat protection effort also highlights the broader importance of healthy rivers. Rivers designated as critical habitat often support numerous other species, including fish, amphibians, aquatic insects, and migratory wildlife. Actions that improve conditions for mussels often yield benefits across the ecosystem, creating healthier waterways for both wildlife and people.
Among the four protected species, the snuffbox mussel has experienced particularly significant declines, disappearing from many waterways where it was once common. The sheepnose, spectaclecase, and rayed bean have faced similar challenges as river systems have been altered by development and infrastructure projects. Conservationists hope the designation will help stabilize remaining populations while creating opportunities for recovery.
Freshwater mussels are among the most endangered groups of animals in North America. Scientists estimate that many species have already disappeared from large portions of their historic ranges. Their sensitivity to environmental change makes them especially vulnerable, but it also means they can serve as important indicators of river health. Protecting mussels often helps identify and address broader ecological problems affecting waterways.

Challenges remain. Habitat protection alone cannot solve every threat facing freshwater ecosystems. Even so, the designation represents a significant step forward. As conservation efforts continue, these endangered mussels may help demonstrate how protecting small, often overlooked creatures can yield lasting benefits for entire ecosystems.
