European bison reintroduction in Romania’s Southern Carpathians has passed a major milestone. More than 250 bison now roam free in the Tarcu Mountains. Over half of them were born in the wild, a sign of a truly self-sustaining herd.
The comeback started small. In 2012, Rewilding Europe, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Romania, and the local Armeniș community began planning the first release after a favorable feasibility study. That early groundwork set the stage for one of the largest free-ranging bison populations in Europe.
Planners built a 16-hectare enclosure to help the animals adjust before life in the open mountains. In 2014, the first bison arrived in the Tarcu Mountains. They spent two years there, slowly getting used to their new home.
By 2016, the herd was ready. Caretakers opened the gates and let the bison roam free for the first time. That single decision marked the true start of this European bison reintroduction in the wild.
The European bison almost disappeared forever. Hunters shot the last wild bison in the Caucasus region in 1927. Only 54 animals remained, all living in zoos and private parks.
Conservation programs slowly rebuilt the species from that tiny group. Europe now counts more than 8,000 bison across the continent. Romania’s growing herd is one bright piece of that wider European bison reintroduction success.
By 2023, the Romanian population had reached 152 animals. Caretakers added eight more bison that year to strengthen the herd’s gene pool. Fresh genetics help keep a small population healthy over many generations.

Bison are not simply impressive to look at. They act as a keystone species, meaning their presence shapes the whole ecosystem around them. Remove them, and many other species lose out too.
A single adult male can weigh over 840 kilograms, roughly the weight of a small car. As bison push through thick brush, they carve paths that other animals later use. Birds even collect their shed fur to line their nests, adding natural insulation.
Each bison eats more than 30 kilograms of plants daily, about the weight of a large suitcase. That grazing spreads seeds from over 200 plant species across the landscape. The result is a patchwork of open meadows and forest that supports far more wildlife.
Two centuries ago, European bison wandered freely across much of the continent. Farming, logging, and hunting pushed them out of one region after another. By the early 1900s, the species existed only in captivity.
Scientists and conservation groups spent decades on careful breeding programs to reverse that decline. Each new generation carried the hope of returning bison to the wild. Romania’s Southern Carpathians became one of the places chosen for this European bison reintroduction.
Monitoring plays a quiet but vital role in this bison reintroduction story. Researchers track the free-ranging herd to understand how the animals move, feed, and raise their young. That ongoing data helps guide future bison reintroduction projects in other parts of Europe.
The next phase of this bison reintroduction effort looks beyond the animals themselves. Through a new initiative called LIFE with Bison, organizers want to build the first bison-smart community in the region. The plan also calls for Romania’s first national action plan for bison management.
Local communities have felt the benefits too. New nature-based businesses and guided tours are giving people fresh ways to earn a living near the herd. People are learning to live alongside the animals instead of viewing them as a threat.
This European bison reintroduction does not stand alone. Conservationists are also mapping river barriers through a separate Open Rivers initiative, working over the course of a year to identify blockages for possible removal. Reconnecting free-flowing rivers gives fish and other wildlife the same freedom that bison now enjoy on land.
A parallel Wildlife Comeback program adds another layer to this recovery. Teams monitor existing animal populations and release new individuals where numbers are low, restoring balance between species across the region. Paired with the European bison reintroduction, this work treats the whole landscape, not just one animal, as the goal.
Romania’s progress echoes similar wins with other reintroduced species around the world, proving that patient, science-led recovery plans work across very different landscapes.
The story of the Southern Carpathians shows how one European bison reintroduction can rebuild an entire landscape. Where mountains once stood empty of bison, herds now graze, wander, and multiply on their own. Their return offers a hopeful blueprint for other places hoping to bring back what was lost.
