For decades, cougars in Minnesota were largely considered passing visitors. The discovery comes from the University of Minnesota’s Voyageurs Wolf Project, which captured the first documented evidence of cougars reproducing in Minnesota in more than a century. Trail cameras recorded a female cougar accompanied by three large kittens in northern Minnesota, providing the strongest indication yet that the species may be reestablishing itself within part of its historical range.
Cougars, also known as mountain lions or pumas, were once native to Minnesota. However, habitat loss, hunting, and persecution led to their disappearance from the state more than 100 years ago. While occasional sightings have become increasingly common in recent decades, wildlife officials generally believed these animals were transient individuals traveling from established populations in places such as South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska.
The new footage transforms the narrative around cougars returning to Minnesota. Researchers with the Voyageurs Wolf Project captured approximately four hours of video showing a mother cougar interacting with her kittens near a deer carcass south of Voyageurs National Park. The footage revealed behaviors rarely seen in the wild, including grooming, vocalizations, and sibling interactions. Based on the kittens’ appearance, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources biologists estimate they were approximately seven to nine months old when recorded.
The finding is particularly important because reproduction is one of the clearest indicators that a species may be establishing a resident population. Wildlife sightings alone do not necessarily signal recovery, especially when animals can travel long distances. Cougars can cover more than 40 miles in a single day, allowing wandering individuals to appear far from breeding populations. The presence of a female successfully raising kittens suggests something more substantial may be occurring.
Even so, researchers are cautious about predicting what comes next. Establishing a self-sustaining population requires more than a single successful litter. Young cougars face numerous challenges, including vehicle collisions, competition with other predators, and natural mortality. Wildlife biologists emphasize that it may take years to determine whether the state is witnessing the beginning of a lasting population recovery or an isolated event.

Studies of large carnivore recovery in other regions have shown that their return can trigger cascading ecological effects that benefit vegetation, smaller wildlife species, and overall biodiversity.
