Ailuna: bringing together technology and good people for a brighter future
By Helene Rønning
Humans are complex beings. We are constantly innovating, analysing information and solving problems. Yet at the same time, we can be complacent, destructive and blind to the problems we are causing, especially without any support or help to do things differently.
Most of us want to help change the world for the better. But we don’t know where to start, we feel alone, overwhelmed or just don’t believe that our small actions can make a difference.
Small changes, big impact
But every little positive change can have a huge cumulative impact on our environment and on the planet as a whole. It’s just difficult to see that impact as one person.
But imagine this: there are millions of people just like you out there. Millions of people who aren’t quite convinced that their actions and behaviours in their kitchen or bathroom, or when they’re going about their daily life, are having any kind of impact at all. What if every single one of those people decided to make one small change to their life today? That would equate to a massive impact!
What if we could all come together to see how our collective changes are making a difference? Being able to see all those people making small efforts to reduce waste, live a greener lifestyle and address the climate crisis would be quite the motivator.
Technology for good
Technology and its advancement is one of our most powerful tools when it comes to changing how we behave in order to lessen our damage to the planet. We have a whole world of information and resources at our fingertips – but sometimes how to use it for the best without becoming disheartened or overwhelmed can be hard.
Ailuna is an app and online platform that helps its users to develop and keep to a growing list of impactful habits. It’s built around a series of dares, with built-in support, resources and information to help you succeed in making your new habits stick. You can invite friends and family to join you, stock up on essential eco products and earn badges for habits built. Developed in consultation with behavioural science advisors, its approach combines a number of proven approaches to building and sustaining new habits:
- Repetition. It’s no good trying a new approach to sustainable and eco-friendly living every day. We need to pick a change we want to stick to long term, and work on it day after day. The longer you stick to a new habit, the more likely it is to stick.
- Manageability. Similarly, if someone came and told you you had to make huge adjustments to the way you live, you’d probably run a mile. That’s why Ailuna’s dares are easy to start and feel achievable from the beginning. You can build up as your confidence and list of eco habits grows, but starting small is definitely the best path to success.
- Support and community. By feeling like we’re all in this together and we have somewhere to go when we need help or support, we are much more likely to stick to our new habits. Accountability is powerful too – if you tell someone else you’re going to do something, you’re much more likely to do it. You can interact in Ailuna’s community or choose to use the built-in 1:1 messaging tool to chat with other users.
Ailuna encourages users to tackle one new habit at a time, rather than taking on something new each day. By sticking to one small change, you’re much more likely to create a lasting habit that makes a real difference. The dares are based around proven behavioural science theories, meaning users have a much better chance of success – and the more success you experience, the more motivated you are to try a new dare once you’ve completed the first!
