Why Rechargeable Vapes Are the Only Sustainability Argument the Category Has

A single-use vape is a rechargeable lithium battery engineered to be thrown away after a weekend. That is the environmental problem in one sentence, and no amount of recyclable cardboard around it changes the math.

The volume is the part most people underestimate. Material Focus, the UK non-profit behind much of the country’s battery-recycling research, counted roughly 8.2 million single-use vapes binned or wrongly recycled every week in 2024. Britain’s ban on single-use vapes in June 2025 pulled that down to about 6.3 million a week — lower, but still a battery-bearing device thrown out somewhere in the country every few hundredths of a second. Stretch the count across four years and it passes 1.18 billion units. Most never reach a recycler: more than half are binned rather than recycled, even though up to 80% of the materials inside could be recovered.

Those batteries do not sit quietly once they are buried. Lithium cells ignite when they are punctured or crushed, which is exactly what happens to them inside a collection truck or on a sorting line. Fire Rover, which tracks blazes at North American waste sites, reported a 15% year-over-year rise in battery-related fires at US and Canadian facilities in 2024, and a 20% jump at the sorting and transfer stations where loose cells get compacted. The US Environmental Protection Agency classifies discarded vapes as hazardous waste for this reason. And here is the part the marketing never mentions: dropping the nicotine does nothing to fix it. A zero-nicotine device still carries the same battery, board, and plastic shell into the same waste stream.

Then there is the raw-materials waste. Lithium, copper, and the other metals in these devices are mined, refined, and shipped at real environmental cost, and a disposable spends that cost on a few days of use before it is gone. Material Focus estimates the lithium thrown away inside UK vapes in a single year would be enough to power thousands of electric-vehicle batteries — metal pulled out of the ground, used for a weekend, then buried. Recovering it is possible; the same researchers put the recoverable share at up to 80%. But recovery only happens if the device reaches a recycler, and most do not. Part of the gap is plain awareness — Material Focus found that nearly half of vapers did not know the devices could be recycled at all, so the battery goes in the bin by default.

Consumer habits guarantee that they won’t. In a 2024 Truth Initiative study published in the journal Addiction, surveying Americans aged 15 to 24, about 53% said they toss spent devices in the household trash and only around 13% recycle them. People treat a disposable the way the name tells them to. The product is designed to be forgotten the moment it stops working, and that is precisely what its owners do with it.

So what actually moves the needle? Keep the battery; replace only what gets used up. That is the entire case for rechargeable and refillable hardware. A rechargeable device tops up over USB-C and runs for the equivalent of dozens of disposables on one cell. A refillable pod system goes a step further — the device stays in your hand and only the pod is swapped out.

The headline number is not the point — one battery doing the work of many is.

We won’t pretend this is a clean win, because it isn’t. A rechargeable still contains a lithium cell that has to be recycled responsibly at the end of its life, and a “20,000-puff” device only helps the planet if it is actually run to the end and then dropped at an e-waste point rather than a curbside bin. A rechargeable tossed in the trash at half-life is barely better than the disposable it replaced. The advantage is real, but it is conditional — it depends on the owner treating the device as durable goods instead of a consumable. We would rather say that plainly than oversell it, which is also why we publish our third-party lab testing: the vapes are tested by Legend Technical Services to ISO 17025, and the results are posted rather than asserted.

The category’s only honest sustainability claim is the unglamorous one: make fewer devices, keep each in service longer, and recycle the battery when it is finally done. Disposables fail all three by design — that is what “single-use” means. Rechargeable and refillable hardware at least puts the better choice on the table. Picking it up, and seeing it through to the recycling bin, is the part no manufacturer can do for you.
