Plastic is a part of our daily lives. There is no debate around this fact; however, the question that remains is how much of our lives do we want to be governed by plastic, and how do we want to source that plastic? Right now, virtually all commercially available plastic products are created using fossil fuels, which have been proven to be incredibly harmful to our environment and the people around it.

As we transition into a cleaner and healthier world, the circular economy is becoming more and more important as consumers are demanding a shift to being able to recycle, reuse, and reimagine how they use plastic products. A company in Alberta, Canada, has been thinking about this for a long time, and just recently, they have announced the release of new plastic products made entirely from recycled plastic.

NOVA Chemicals is a petrochemical company that has been operating for a long time. Since 1954, they have been manufacturing plastic and chemical products that have been and continue to be used everywhere. However, they can see that the tide is changing as well, which is why they have debuted a sub-brand called Syndigo.

Syndigo is providing recycled plastic products made from a variety of materials that otherwise would go into the landfill. EX-PCR-WR3 resin is made from agricultural film and has applications for e-commerce mailers, can liners, carry-out bags, protective packaging, and shrink. EX-PCR-NC4 resin is made from stretch film and can be used for heavy-duty sacks, e-commerce mailers, stretch wrap, collation shrink, protective packaging, and industrial films. Finally, there is EX-PCR-HD5 which is sourced from HDPE milk jugs and is ideal for flexible packaging, heavy-duty sacks, and small-part blow molding.

All are mechanically recycled in-house and are designed to support recycled content and decarbonization goals for consumers. None of these products are compromised in terms of their strength and durability, which consistently has been of concern regarding recycled plastic materials.

In supporting the circular economy, manufacturers must step up their effort when it comes to recycling their products. Now that the demand is here, there are more incentives towards engaging with the circular economy than there are drawbacks.

NOVA Chemicals is one of the oldest and most prominent petrochemical companies in its field, and by setting an example with this latest initiative, they are showing other potential competitors that not only is this possible, but it is profitable as well.
