National Bird Day

National Bird Day on January 5th is a special day that nature lovers, bird enthusiasts, and bird watchers across the country look forward to every year. It’s a day where we celebrate the beauty and diversity of birds and raise awareness about the dangers that threaten many species with extinction.

National Bird Day is also the date of the annual “Christmas Bird Count,” – an annual citizen survey in the USA where the results provide information about birds’ numbers and health across the US and Canada.

It was created in 2002 by the Avian Welfare Coalition in collaboration with Born Free USA to raise awareness of the hardships and plights of these important animals and how we can initiate the change needed to create a healthier, more sustainable relationship with them.

On National Bird Day, people are encouraged to take a walk in nature to observe the birds in their natural habitats. This is a great way to appreciate the important role that birds play in our environment and the ecosystem as a whole.

One of the main purposes of National Bird Day is to draw attention to the plight of birds that are at risk of extinction due to various threats such as habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and poaching. By recognizing these threats and taking action to address them, we can help protect these beautiful creatures for future generations.

Finally, it’s worth noting that National Bird Day isn’t just about celebrating birds in the wild. It’s also an opportunity to raise awareness about the harmful practices of capturing or producing birds in captivity for monetary gain or pleasure. By advocating for the protection of birds and their habitats, we can ensure that they continue to thrive and bring joy to people worldwide.

It aims to acknowledge the importance of birds to the Earth’s ecosystem.
