A California-based company has achieved a significant milestone that could transform the way the world powers everything from artificial intelligence data centers to cargo ships. Prometheus Fuels announced it has reduced the direct air capture technology cost to under $50 per ton, making it more than 80 percent cheaper than existing methods.

This breakthrough means the company can now produce clean fuels that cost less than traditional fossil fuels, without needing government subsidies or special infrastructure. The technology works by pulling carbon dioxide straight from the air and combining it with renewable electricity to create liquid fuels that can power generators, vehicles, and industrial facilities.

The achievement represents a dramatic shift in the carbon capture industry landscape. Most current carbon capture systems cost between $200 and $600 per ton of carbon dioxide captured, with leading companies like Climeworks reporting costs around $600-$1000 per ton and Carbon Engineering estimating $94-$232 per ton. These high costs have made it nearly impossible to create synthetic fuels that can compete with oil and gas prices.

Prometheus has built a new 200-ton-per-year carbon capture system at its Santa Cruz headquarters, adding to its existing 16-ton system that has been operating for more than four years. The company’s approach differs significantly from traditional carbon capture methods. Instead of using complex gas purification, compression, and storage systems, Prometheus captures carbon dioxide directly into water and immediately converts it into fuel using their patented Faraday Reactor. Rob McGinnis, founder and CEO of Prometheus, explained that low-cost carbon capture opens up access to the best solar energy locations worldwide, which are often far from traditional carbon sources. The company’s modular, off-grid systems can be placed wherever renewable electricity is cheapest, then transport the liquid fuels anywhere in the world.

The technology addresses a growing energy crisis in multiple sectors. Data centers powering artificial intelligence are experiencing explosive growth, with electricity demand projected to more than double by 2030. The International Energy Agency reports that data center consumption is rising at approximately 15 percent annually, more than four times the pace of overall electricity demand growth globally.

Traditional solutions like new nuclear plants, massive transmission projects, or long-duration batteries face significant challenges. Nuclear plants take decades to build and approve. Transmission projects encounter lengthy permitting and construction delays. Batteries can only store a few hours of power and cannot operate continuously around the clock.

Prometheus demonstrated its technology’s potential by powering artificial intelligence entirely with fuel made from air and renewable electricity. This marks the first time in history that AI has been powered by liquid fuel created entirely from atmospheric carbon dioxide and solar electricity. By combining low-cost solar electricity with carbon dioxide captured from air, they produce liquid fuels that can be transported anywhere, stored on-site, and used in existing turbines and generators. Data centers currently wait years for new grid connections, while utilities warn of rising electricity costs. The gap between energy supply and demand continues to widen each quarter. Existing data centers running on natural gas can switch to Prometheus fuels while maintaining the same reliability and independence standards.
