Amazon has rolled out a new eco-friendly packaging solution for cold chain grocery deliveries. This recyclable packaging not only preserves the freshness of perishable items but also contributes to reducing plastic waste in the e-commerce industry.

Amazon’s innovative recyclable grocery delivery packaging represents a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to sustainability. This packaging is crafted from recycled paper tissue, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials while still effectively maintaining the temperature of cold and frozen products during transit. The journey towards this environmentally conscious solution began in 2019 as part of Amazon’s strategic initiative to move away from plastic liners and bubble-bag insulation. By prioritizing sustainability in its operations, Amazon is demonstrating a proactive approach toward reducing its environmental impact and promoting more eco-friendly practices within the e-commerce industry.

In addition to its eco-friendly composition, the new packaging from Amazon boasts a streamlined and compact design that serves a dual purpose: not only does it help preserve the temperature of cold and frozen products during transit, but it also maximizes space efficiency within delivery vehicles. This innovative design allows for more deliveries per vehicle, significantly reducing carbon emissions associated with transportation.

According to the company, this sustainable packaging initiative will replace a substantial amount of plastic film, cotton fiber, and non-recyclable mixed plastics, amounting to 735,000 pounds of plastic film, 3.15 million pounds of cotton fiber, and 15 million pounds of non-recyclable plastics.

The company tested the effectiveness of the recyclable packaging in its own labs and external thermal labs in North America and Europe. Then, in 2020, Amazon piloted the packaging in multiple locations with varying temperature scenarios.

Amazon’s adoption of recyclable packaging for cold chain deliveries will directly benefit customers who rely on its grocery services, such as Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods. With this eco-friendly packaging, customers can engage in online grocery shopping while significantly reducing their environmental footprint. This initiative aligns perfectly with the values of sustainability and responsible consumption held by many of Amazon’s customers.

The implementation of recyclable cold chain packaging is just one facet of Amazon’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This initiative complements the company’s existing sustainability endeavours, such as the adoption of frozen, recyclable water bottles. Other Amazon commitments include using more than 100,000 electric vehicles, implementing 100% renewable energy by 2030 and having half of all its shipments be net zero by 2030.
