The prototype can go from 0 to fully charged in just 10 minutes, potentially eliminating one of the biggest limiting factors for e-vehicles: that they take longer to “refuel” than their petrol-powered counterparts. The StoreDot XFC cell uses the 4680 format (46 millimeters wide by 80 millimeters long), increasingly favoured by leading carmakers, including Tesla. Work on the batteries began at Warwick University in the UK and was conducted in collaboration with BP, StoreDot’s strategic partner. Although the exact battery design is a company secret, StoreDot does say that the batteries “leverage ion diffusion capability” and use nano-materials and “natural and inorganic compounds”.
