World Water Day

World Water Day is an annual event that takes place on March 22nd. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 to draw attention to the importance of freshwater and the need for sustainable management of water resources. The first celebration of World Water Day took place on March 22nd, 1994.

Water is essential for life, and its availability and quality are critical factors in determining the health, well-being, and economic growth of communities worldwide. World Water Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater and advocate for the sustainable management of water resources.

The history of World Water Day dates back to the 1970s when the United Nations began to focus on water-related issues. In 1977, the UN General Assembly designated March 22nd as World Water Day, but it wasn’t until 1993 that the day was officially recognized.

Since then, World Water Day has become an important global platform for raising awareness about water-related issues and promoting sustainable practices for managing water resources. Each year, the day focuses on a different theme related to water, such as water scarcity, water quality, water governance, or water and climate change.

In addition to raising awareness, World Water Day also serves as a call to action for individuals, governments, and organizations around the world to take concrete steps to promote sustainable management of water resources. Activities on this day include educational programs, community events, and advocacy campaigns to support access to safe and clean water for all.

The day provides a platform for individuals, governments, and organizations to come together to promote effective and sustainable practices for managing water resources and ensuring access to clean and safe water for all.

How to celebrate:

  • Clean up your local water source by picking up garbage and litter near your local rivers and streams.
  • Reduce your water footprint by taking shorter showers or turning off the tap when you aren’t using it.
  • Organize an event to raise awareness.
  • Collect donations for areas with extreme needs for clean and accessible water.
  • Watch a water documentary.
  • Choose recycled goods while grocery shopping. It takes less water and energy to turn materials into recycled goods than to create goods with raw materials.

Fun Facts:

  • Water constitutes up to 65% of the human body and 90% of the structure of plants.
  • Nearly 97% of the world’s water is salty or otherwise undrinkable. Another 2% is locked in ice caps and glaciers.
  • The saltiest water in the world is found in Antarctica in a small lake named Don Juan Pond.
  • A person can live about a month without food but only a week without water.
  • 96.5% of the water on Earth is in the oceans.
  • A leaky tap dripping at one drip per second can waste more than 3000 gallons of water annually.
  • The water cycle is 3.8 billion years old because the water cycle (evaporation, condensation and precipitation) is endless.
