World Leaders Agree To Forge a “Historic” Treaty on Plastic Waste

  • World leaders, environment ministers and representatives from 173 countries have agreed to develop a legally binding treaty which would cover the full lifecycle of plastic production.
  • The resolution also introduced provisions to recognize waste pickers and the acknowledgment of the role of indigenous peoples.
  • The treaty will include financial and technical support as well as a scientific body to advise it and the possibility of a global fund.
