Many manufacturers utilize this non-chemical method as a final step in the treatment train to ensure microbial safety. It removes the need for chemicals like chlorine, which can affect the taste of plant-based food and create harmful byproducts. 

UV disinfection offers a fast and effective way to deactivate bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. It is safe, cost-effective, and FDA-approved. 

5. Ultrafiltration

Ultrafiltration (UF) pushes water through a membrane, removing 3nm or smaller contaminants, such as suspended solids, colloids, bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and organic molecules. It provides consistent and stable water quality without using chemicals. 

Food manufacturers use this method as a high-performance, pretreatment step before a reverse osmosis system. It reduces the fouling rate of RO membranes. UF is often used to clarify products, such as wine, juice, and vinegar. 

Ultrafiltration can provide better protection for RO systems compared to media filtration and other treatment methods. It helps prolong membrane life and reduces cleaning and maintenance.
