1) Sustainable Bioplastic Doesn’t Need Water or Land For Production
A new research paper from Tel Aviv University details the process to make bioplastic polymers that don’t require land or fresh water. The polymer is created from microorganisms that feed on seaweed. The result is biodegradable, produces zero toxic waste and recycles into organic waste. Plastics account for up to 90 percent of all the pollutants in our oceans and their fabrication is a highly toxic and polluting process. Genuine plastic alternatives difficult to achieve however, until now, scientists have struggled to create environmentally friendly alternatives.

2) World’s Largest Solar + Battery Plant Unveiled in Hawaii
Hawaii has a new, game-changing tool in its renewable energy arsenal. Power producer AES Corporation and the not-for-profit Kaua’i island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) unveiled what’s claimed to be the world’s largest solar -plus-storage peaker on the island of Kauai on Tuesday, the Lāwa’i Solar and Energy Storage Project. This is a significant step to help the Aloha State reach its 100 percent renewable energy goal by 2045, one of the most aggressive decarbonization targets in the nation. So what exactly does this thing do? The battery-based energy storage system—consisting of a 28-megawatts of solar PV and 20-megawatt lithium-ion battery—is designed to supply the grid with peak power output for up to five hours while simultaneously charging the batteries.

4) Elon Musk: Tesla ‘might have a prototype’ pickup truck next year – Business Insider
It’s far from the first time Musk has outlined ambitious plans for an electric pickup truck. The billionaire has been talking about it since at least 2013. He said in December that the truck would arrive after the Model Y, so that would likely mean sometime after 2019.
Earlier this year, Musk tweeted that the truck would come standard with dual-motor all-wheel drive, “crazy torque,” and a suspension that dynamically adjusts for the load.
Pickup trucks are easily one of the most popular car segments in the country, but it’s also one of the most competitive markets. Business Insider’s Matt DeBord points out that while building a truck wouldn’t necessarily be complicated, the company would have to compete with the ultra-popular F-150, Chevy Silverado, Ram 1500 and more in the crowded space.
