Hyundai’s 150-megawatt energy storage system will overtake Tesla’s 100-megawatt facility in South Australia as the world’s largest industrial energy storage system. The $45 million project will provide power for a metal smelting operation and will save almost $60 million in electricity expenses in three years once the facility is built. KoreaZinc is also complying with the South Korean government’s larger efforts to boost renewables and mitigate air pollution. Large-scale batteries now make more sense than ever due to lower prices for the lithium technology. This, combined with solar power now being cheaper than traditional fossil fuel based generation allows renewable energy as a viable source for industrial power.

The reticulated siren is a previously unknown aquatic eel-like salamander. At approximately 2 feet long or roughly 60 cm, the creature is certainly not small. Living completely underwater and in soft, sedimentary mud bottoms, it is not surprising that it has been able to avoid detection by scientists for so long. With this new discovery comes hope that other species may also reside in the swamps of the southern United States and elsewhere, waiting to be discovered.

4) Demand for the Porsche Taycan electric sedan is surging, and Porsche’s CEO says the company will build more
Porsche hasn’t built its first battery-electric car, the Taycan sedan, but it already plans to increase production. Strong demand has led to increased production plans. Porsche released the Taycan’s initial specifications earlier this year and said the electric sedan would come with over 600 horsepower and 300 miles of estimated range. In Norway, where Porsche sells roughly 600 cars per year, the company has received 3000 deposits on orders for the new electric vehicle. The segment currently dominated by Tesla is beginning to get crowded but shows no sign of slowing down. Mercedes, BMW and Audi all have introduced full EV sport sedans in recent months, all with performance oriented drivetrains.
