The Top 5 Happy Eco News Stories for November 29, 2021
Thanks for reading the Top 5 Happy Eco News!
What a year in my home province of BC. My beautiful home province has certainly had a rough go. Despite having a pretty good covid response and vaccination rate, mother nature has decided to bring some pretty heavy stuff down on us in 2021. Drought in the spring, followed by record-setting temperatures in the summer foretold a season of many fires.
Following multiple consecutive days of extreme temperatures, on June 29, the town of Lytton set the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada. The next day it burned. Now this winter, with record-setting rainfall, we have devastating flooding, landslides, and infrastructure losses.
But in spite of this awful destruction, I still have hope and optimism for the future. Now, finally in 2021 after decades of inaction, the world now seems to be waking up to the idea that yes, this is real. Yes, the scientists were right.
I have optimism because now, finally, it would appear we are taking action.
This week, our first guest post is by Dr. Neil Williams and Dr. Ciara Muldoon who talk about their charitable search engine SearchScene. Our second blog post is by Trisha Bhujle, blogger for The Sentimental Environmental(ist), and she tells us about how we can make our own toiletries. We also have stories about the Earthshot Prize winners, researchers and Indigenous groups collaboration to save the caribou, the new USDA grants focus on food systems, how farmers are using owl to protect their vineyards, and the companies that are pledging to use zero-carbon shipping fuels.
Happy Reading!

There can hardly be a greater example of the inequity in the world than the difference between the big-tech billionaires, with their private jets and mega-yachts, and the poor, impoverished children in parts of Africa that have to walk miles each day just to get dirty water for themselves and their families. We wondered what the world would be like if, instead of continuing to prop up big tech companies, users switched to a more charitable alternative….[read more].
The Upgrade to Homemade: A Look at Making Your Own Toiletries
Guest Blog by: Trisa Bhuijle, blogger for The Sentimental Environmental(ist)
From entire cupboards of hairspray bottles to neatly wrapped boxes of bar soap, the number of cosmetics or toiletries lining the average homeowner’s vanity is substantial, to say the least. But while these products certainly do their job of brightening and whitening, they’re also saturated with chemicals that, once dumped in a trashcan or washed down the drain, eventually make their way deep into the soil and into water bodies and harm the life that resides there. Wanting to learn more about the chemical-free alternatives to some of my favorite personal products, I met with Mrs.Manjula Krishnamurthy to ask her about her experience with making her own shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, and toothpastes entirely out of edible ingredients. I was awestruck by her choice to pursue a more natural route to cleanliness, and I think it’s safe to say that she had some fascinating stories — and some eye-opening advice — to share…[read more].
