The Great Wrap-Up; How this non-Plastic Wrap Company is Changing its Industry.
Plastic dominates our world. From our computers to our chairs, our clothes and even our toothbrushes are manufactured primarily with plastic. Even in cookware and food storage, we cannot escape the reality that plastic is the primary way we handle it. There are alternatives, of course, but those are few and far between. However, as more and more awareness is drawn to the long-term consequences of plastic pollution, more and more companies are taking the initiative and providing products that give back to our environment than take from it.
This is where The Great Wrap enters the picture. Founded by Jordy and Julia Kay in Melbourne, Australia, this is one of the first major pushes toward changing the way we handle our food. While some plastic wrap companies’ products are biodegradable, often times that label is misleading as it means that the plastics break down in our environment but not into anything that can be beneficial or even neutral to our environment.
In reality, the chemicals they break down into often can become more difficult to clean up after decomposition due to the fact that they are, well, broken down. The Great Wrap is compostable, which means that you can throw it into the same bin as your food waste, feeding the soil and giving it nutrients rather than degrading it.
They do this by using the byproducts of the potato chip industry, of which numerous whole potatoes and all the skins get tossed due to their imperfections. They take this natural waste and create a biopolymer plastic-like material they can put onto rolls and sell. As for the rolls they come on, they use recycled plastic bottles to create a hard shell that protects and effectively cuts the material. There are downsides, of course, as it is a plastic-like product, it cannot be heated in the microwave on high or medium heat for very long without risk of it melting. However, it can safely be put in the fridge for up to two years without breaking down.
As more people begin and continue to wake up to the unfortunate situation, we are in with our environment, more and more demand change. Pressure has been put on companies and countries to develop sustainable products and solutions to this multifaceted problem.
The Great Wrap sets a very good example of how this market can be catered to and protect our environment in the same process.
