Shift Browser Launches New Tool to Calculate Your Digital Footprint And Offset a Year of Your Internet Carbon Use

Between climate headlines and record-breaking weather, it’s easy to feel powerless about making a real impact. But what if your everyday browsing habits were part of the problem—and the solution?

Starting today, the climate-focused web browser Shift will launch its Browsing Footprint Calculator, a quick, two-minute quiz that reveals the hidden environmental cost of online activity. By asking about everything from AI tool usage to Zoom calls to the mountain of unread emails in your inbox, the calculator helps people understand the true scale of their digital footprint.

The stakes are high: researchers estimate the internet is responsible for nearly 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a figure projected to rise as more of our lives move online. Much of this impact comes from the massive energy demand of data centers, networks, and the devices we use daily.

Shift hopes to make those invisible costs visible. “Most people don’t realize their online habits carry a carbon cost,” said Shift’s Sabrina Banadyga. “The calculator is designed to be a wake-up call—but also a starting point. We want to show people that they can make a difference without having to overhaul their entire lifestyle.”

As an incentive, Shift is also pledging to offset one full year of carbon emissions from internet usage for every person who takes the quiz. That means participants can instantly make their digital life carbon neutral—at least for the next 12 months.

The calculator builds on Shift’s broader mission to reimagine the web browser as a tool for climate action. Unlike traditional browsers, Shift comes with a Carbon Meter that measures and offsets your footprint automatically, whether you’re working, streaming, or deep in the scroll. It’s easy and simple to use: as you are carrying out your daily routine and tasks online using Shift browser, will measure the carbon footprint used across apps, websites, or extensions you use within your custom browser, and cover the carbon offsets for every user.

In a world where so much feels out of our control, Shift’s team hopes this small but tangible step can help people feel empowered. As Banadyga added: “Climate action doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Sometimes it starts with the clicks you’re already making.”

The company has continued to make an environmental impact through their actions. Earlier this year they awarded FireSwarm Solutions, who are building AI firefighting drones to fight wildfires, a $25,000 grant through its inaugural Shift Impact Grant program.
