Packaging Waste: 2 States Tackle Producer Responsibility

  • Two states in the United States, Maine and Oregon, have passed new laws which will extend the responsibility to the producer about how to recycle or dispose of their packaging.
  • In Maine the law addresses packaging and will have producers paying the entire cost of package recycling. In Oregon, they will owe about 25% .
  • The fees will depend on the ease of recyclability, use of post-consumer recycled content and the environmental impacts of the materials.
