A 16-year-old environmental activist rode the bus to the Midland Reporter-Telegram on Friday morning to protest – what she believes to be – its little coverage on climate change. Estrella Villarreal, a soon-to-be junior at Midland High, said Friday’s protest was the beginning of an eight-week climate strike across the city. Villarreal is the Midland city coordinator for Earth Uprising, a nationwide nonprofit organization for youth who care about the environment. Climate Strike Summer is the organization’s summer-long program with a schedule of strikes every Friday through Aug. 16 – known as the Fridays for Future movement. Each local Earth Uprising chapter will gather at a different location every Friday, depending on what the strike is: media, industry and corporations, colonialism, plastic pollution, education, politicians, banks or the fossil fuel industry – which are all important matters to the climate crisis, she said.
