Discover how niLuu, a U.S.-based company, is revolutionizing the fashion industry with its opulent and environmentally-friendly loungewear collection made from vegan silk. By prioritizing sustainability in material selection, manufacturing practices, and waste management, niLuu offers a guilt-free luxury experience that is both fashionable and eco-conscious.

Luxury often comes at a significant cost to the planet, but niLuu is challenging this norm. The company’s mission is to make your home and pool lounging experience opulent while also promoting sustainability. Their collection of loungewear doubles as swimwear coverups, offering a seamless blend of style and eco-friendliness.

One of niLuu’s key innovations is the use of vegan silk, a PETA-approved material that eliminates the need for silkworms or animal proteins in production. Traditional silk production involves boiling over 1,000 silkworms to produce enough yarn for a single pillowcase. Moreover, animal-derived substances like bone marrow and egg yolk are often used in industrial fabric softeners. In contrast, niLuu’s vegan silk ensures that no animals are harmed during the manufacturing process.

The material used by niLuu, known as Cupro, is a result of a fruitful partnership between material developers and manufacturers in Turkey. Designer Nilufer Bracco, the founder of niLuu, carefully selected Ipeker Tekstil as her direct material supplier due to their long-standing history in silk production and commitment to sustainability. Ipeker Tekstil, recognized as the top sustainable company in Turkey, implements the Blue Balance Sustainability Programme (BSOB), which focuses on fair wages, worker safety, and resource-saving practices.

The Cupro fabric, derived from cotton seeds that were previously considered a wasteful byproduct of the cotton industry, is a standout feature of niLuu’s collection. Bracco prefers to work with a 100% Bemberg® fabric, which closely replicates the smoothness of traditional silk while being sustainable. Cupro not only offers luxurious weight, texture, and feel but is also fully biodegradable. If these garments find their way to a landfill, they lose half their weight within two months, minimizing their impact on the environment.

Asahi Kasei, Ipeker’s material development partner, plays a significant role in ensuring the sustainability of the fabrics. Their closed-loop facility produces Bemberg® using a process that avoids harmful chemicals being released into the environment. Asahi has earned certifications for biodegradability, global recycled standards, and environmental impact reduction and prevention.

In Japan, where Cupro yarn is produced, a plant with on-site energy production utilizes renewable energy sources such as hydropower, biomass power generation, and solar power. The facility employs a closed-loop system, capturing and reprocessing waste, recovering solvents, and minimizing heat loss and CO2 emissions.

While niLuu acknowledges that achieving 100% sustainability is a constant journey, they are committed to offsetting their impact through initiatives such as a membership to 1% for The Planet, which supports tree planting to combat deforestation. Additionally, the company donated 10% of its revenue to the Sustainable Ocean Alliance for one month following Earth Day.

Based in Miami, niLuu is directly influenced by the impacts of climate change and is passionate about creating a luxury brand that prioritizes both the planet and its workers. Their core values revolve around sustainability, rejecting any products that have a negative impact on the environment, support unfair labor conditions, or involve animal cruelty.

For niLuu, sustainability is not just a destination but an ongoing journey. By embracing eco-friendly practices, niLuu is setting a new standard for luxury fashion that is beautiful, ethical, and sustainable. Indulge in their vegan silk collection and experience guilt-free luxury without compromising your values.
