Just Outside Mexico City, Community-Run Forests Provide Eco Services, Livelihoods

  • Communities in the municipalities of Texcoco and Tepetlaoxtoc de Hidalgo are using forest management as a tool to sustain themselves and conserve their forests.
  • They complement these activities with collecting edible mushrooms and medicinal plants and ecotourism.
  • The ejidatarios of San Juan Totolapan take their children and grandchildren to help with the work of maintaining the forest in order to ensure that they learn how to take care of the forest.
