Huge Deep-Water Area Off N.S. Declared a Marine Refuge

  • Canada has signed an international declaration to set aside 30 per cent of ocean waters by 2030.
  • The area is the Eastern Canyons Marine Refuge,  a 44,000 square kilometre area of ocean off Nova Scotia’s coast.
  • All bottom-contact fisheries (which include trawls, traps and longlines) will be prohibited, and vessels operating in the area must have federal at-sea observers on board.
