How to Travel Safely with a Vintage Engagement Ring
If you want to make a proposal for marriage, then securing the right ring is often crucial. You’ll need something that’s beautiful, for one thing. Ideally, it should also be loaded with symbolism and sentimental value.
In these respects, and others, vintage engagement rings tend to excel. But being one-of-a-kind, these items are often priceless to the people who pick them out or inherit them. What’s more, they tend to be that little bit more fragile than their modern equivalents. As such, they deserve special consideration when you travel with them.
Keep the ring in your carry-on luggage during travel
Your ring should ideally be loaded into your carry-on luggage. This will eliminate the likelihood of it being lost in the cargo hold. There’s no guarantee that your cargo luggage will be handled with care, either, and so, given the size and weight of a ring, there’s no sense in taking a risk by putting it in the hold. The inside pocket of a jacket, or a handbag, might be worthwhile.
Insure and Document the Ring Before Leaving the U.S.
Before you travel with the ring, you should make sure that you have it insured. Make sure that you thoroughly document the item. This means photographing it, collating any receipts, and getting it independently appraised. If you can’t demonstrate the value of the asset, you’ll be unable to make a claim in the event of something going wrong. Having the evidence to hand might also help to speed up the claims process.
Use a Secure Travel Jewelry Case
The more physical protection you can give to your vintage engagement ring, the less likely it is to be damaged. Scratches, squeezes, and knocks can all cause marks. The prongs of a vintage engagement ring tend to be a particular point of vulnerability. If you can ensure that the ring is held still in a padded enclosure, you can keep it protected. Ideally, you should keep this enclosure attached to the bag you’re carrying it in to reduce the risk of it falling out.
Store the Ring Safely at Your Destination
Often, we spend a great deal of time and energy worrying about the ring while we’re transporting it. But you should also take steps to secure it after arrival. Make sure that your accommodation comes with a safe and that you know how to make use of it. Don’t share the combination to the safe with anyone, especially not the hotel staff.
Don’t risk wearing the ring during a hike, a swim, or any other intense physical activity. If the stone comes loose while you’re in the middle of a lake, then you’ll find it almost impossible to recover.
