Fungi Could Make Soil From Asteroids and Homes on Mars

  • UCLA administer, NASA scientists and researchers at Fungi Perfecti are looking to explore how fungi could help turn asteroids into soil.
  • The researchers found that the oyster mushroom had the most promise with breaking down in a simulated asteroid regolith.
  • They’ve found that with the help of this mushroom, scientists could grow plants in the regolith within one to three years.
