  • A new marine reserve north of Galapagos Islands in the Pacific will be created to expand the protected waters by 60 000 square kilometres.
  • The area will link Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands with Panama’s Coiba islands, Colombia’s Malpelo and Costa Rica’s Coco and will help protect the migration routes of rare species as well as 40% of the world’s marine species.
  • “The seas are great regulators of the global climate, taking care of them is not naive idealism, it is a vital necessity” said the Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso.
