Discovery of a New Beaver Benefit is a Happy Accident

  • PhD student Christian Dewey has found that the presence of beaver dams can help improve water quality.
  • He found that as the beaver dam blocked the river, it raised the water levels upstream and pushed water onto the surrounding land.
  • The impact of this was the soil filtered out nitrogen, and soil-dwelling microbes feasted on the chemical, a factor that increased 44% when beavers were present.
