Creating a Skin-Friendly, Eco-Friendly Wellness Routine That Lasts

Most conversations about skin health and skincare revolve around what we put on our bodies rather than what we put in them. While cosmetic products do help to cleanse and protect your skin, if you want healthy, glowing skin, you need to create a wellness routine. A skin-friendly wellness routine will nourish your skin from within, and sticking to this routine will give you visibly clearer, softer skin. One of the most common mistakes is trying to completely overhaul your current routine. Instead, make small changes to your daily routine as this will make it easier to create a wellness routine that lasts.

How to Create a Skin-Friendly Wellness Routine That Lasts

Before creating a skin-friendly wellness routine, you first need to determine your individual needs. This means that you need to take into account your environment, your skin type and any skin conditions such as psoriasis or acne. For instance, if you have psoriasis, your wellness routine will need to address common psoriasis triggers such as stress and dry skin to reduce your risk of a psoriasis flare

On the other hand, if you have acne-prone skin, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends switching to a low-glycemic diet. This is because several studies show that reducing the intake of high-glycemic foods such as white bread, potatoes, and sugary drinks is linked to a reduction in acne. Here are a few things to keep in mind when creating a skin-friendly routine so you can stick to it in the long term:

Nourish your Skin from Within

Diet is a key factor in any skin-friendly wellness routine as our skin reflects our overall health. If you have an unhealthy diet, you will notice that your skin looks dull and lifeless but when you switch to a healthier diet, your skin gets a natural glow. Aim for a diet that contains plenty of colorful fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats, as these foods contain the nutrients your skin needs. Fruits and vegetables are a good source of antioxidants, which protect your skin from free radicals that accelerate aging and dull your complexion. Lean proteins support collagen production while healthy fats maintain the skin’s natural barrier so that your skin stays hydrated.

Move Daily for Glowing Skin

Exercise is one of the most underrated beauty habits. Regular physical activity improves circulation and delivers oxygen and nutrients to skin cells. It also helps to remove toxins through sweat and enhances blood flow for a natural healthy glow that cannot be replicated by any beauty product. Daily exercise also helps to regulate hormones and reduce stress – two of the most common factors for premature skin aging. When starting a daily exercise routine, have realistic goals such as 5 or 10 minutes of walking. Once you are comfortable with this routine, you can gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workout.  Eventually, you should set and reach an exercise goal of 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a day for 5 days a week.

Drink Water to Detoxify Your Skin

Water is one of the most powerful, inexpensive, yet overlooked ways to improve skin health and overall health. Proper hydration aids in detoxification and keeps your skin supple. When your body is well-hydrated, it helps maintain optimal circulation, allowing nutrients to reach skin cells more efficiently.  Keep a water bottle with you so that you can sip water throughout your day to ensure that you drink enough water daily.

Stay Calm for Clearer Skin

Stress doesn’t just affect your mood; it shows on your skin, especially your face. When you have chronic stress, your body produces more of the stress hormone cortisol. High levels of cortisol increase inflammation and trigger breakouts. This is why stress management is an essential part of any skin-friendly wellness routine. If you have a stressful job, take short breaks to practice breathing exercises as this will help you stay calm even during chaotic days. You should also put aside some time for de-stressing at the end of your day.

Get your Beauty Sleep

While we rest, our bodies go into “repair” mode – for our skin, this means replacing damaged cells and boosting collagen production. This is why inadequate sleep for even a few days can leave us looking dull and tired. Ideally, you should aim for 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. If you are used to erratic sleep timings, you will need to slowly change your sleep schedule so that you are able to adjust to the changes. When you wake up refreshed, your skin reflects it with a natural, healthy glow.
