Media captionHere are some coal-fired power stations being demolished over the years The coronavirus crisis has changed the way we use energy, at least for now. But could the global pandemic finally finish off coal, the most polluting of all fossil fuels? The Covid-19 crisis has been an extraordinary and terrifying time for us all, but it has been a fascinating period to cover environmental issues. We’ve all enjoyed the unusually clean air and clear skies. They are the most obvious evidence that we have been living through a unique experiment in energy use. Locking hundreds of millions of us down in our homes around the world has led to an unprecedented fall in energy demand, including for electricity. And that has, in turn, revealed something very striking about the economics of the energy industry: the underlying vulnerability of coal, the fuel that powered the creation of the modern world. Like a tide withdrawing, the Covid-19 crisis has exposed just how fragile the financial foundations of this dirtiest of all fossil fuels have become. Some industry observers are even saying that coal may never recover from the coronavirus pandemic. Let’s look at the evidence stacking up around the world. […]

Hi Grant,
In case no one’s told you lately….you are a gem of light during these strange times.
I share Happy Eco News in my church’s newsletter every Sunday (I’m on the Green Sanctuary team). I am only focusing on good news these days. You are my main source!
Of course I include local good eco-news as well. Today I was able to include the good news regarding one of the largest power plants in Georgia, Georgia Power’s Plant Scherer. The local Altamaha Riverkeepers have tested the water and found coal ash poisons and have managed to fight back and “may” get funding from the state to have the coal ash pits lined.
I just wanted to give you some good eco-news back.
Mostly: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for the work you are doing!
Hi Melissa!
Thank you for your message. It is really nice to hear this; it is music to my ears. I am very glad to hear that your church is doing positive things regarding the environment and I am proud to know that I might be able to help in some small way.
Your comment and others like it ware what keep me going.
Thank you.
Grant
