Students returning to California State University Channel Islands discovered a powerful upgrade to their outdoor spaces: campus solar charging stations disguised as regular benches. These innovative installations, which cost the university nothing, demonstrate how sustainable technology can blend seamlessly into campus life.

The free solar charging stations, provided by Bluebolt Outdoor, combine comfortable seating with advanced charging technology. Each station operates independently from the power grid, using solar panels and lithium batteries to power up to eight devices simultaneously while students study or socialize outdoors.

This program demonstrates how universities can adopt green technology without budget constraints. By integrating campus solar charging stations into everyday furniture, institutions make renewable energy accessible to thousands of students daily, potentially inspiring broader adoption of sustainable solutions.

Each solar charging station contributes to campus sustainability by generating clean solar power year-round, reducing reliance on grid electricity, eliminating the need for indoor charging stations, preventing an estimated [unknown] pounds of carbon emissions annually, and storing enough power for five days of continuous use.

Each station includes four wireless charging spots for compatible devices, four traditional plug-in charging ports, built-in evening lighting for safety, energy storage lasting five days without sun, and two advertising display panels.

The Sustainability and Energy Director at CSU Channel Islands confirms the stations’ impact: “These off-grid benches not only provide much-needed outdoor seating, but they also offer a convenient and sustainable way to charge devices while enjoying the fresh air. They’re a hit with everyone—students love the extra places to socialize, and employees appreciate the comfortable spots to relax between meetings.”

The program shows strong growth in early 2025, with new campus solar charging stations planned at CSU-San Marcos, Antelope Community College, Solano Community College, Lassen College, Colorado State University-Pueblo, and Illinois Eastern Community Colleges. Additional installations will spread across California, Colorado, Illinois, Texas, Louisiana, New York, and Arizona through spring and summer.

Bluebolt makes these charging stations free through a unique approach: each station features two backlit advertising panels.
