• Using images from space and the help of thousands of citizen scientists, researchers have accurately estimated Antarctica’s Weddell seal population for the first time.
  • The citizen scientists were asked to look for where seals are present, their abundance, and the environmental factors influencing their habitat preferences.
  • In total, they found about 202,000 sub-adult and adult female Weddell seals on the continent.
