Thanks to your votes, we WON the category of Nonprofit Changemaker! We’re grateful to work with 1% for the Planet, and look forward to continuing our partnership for years to come. Founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia and Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% for the Planet is rooted in the premises of corporate responsibility and ecological restoration. They firmly believe that “because companies profit from the resources they take from the earth, they should protect those resources.” What began as an idea and a shared sense of responsibility between two guys that love the outdoors has blossomed into a global movement with over 2,000 members in 45 countries. How does it work? Businesses join the network and commit to donating the equivalent of 1% of their gross sales every year (individuals can pledge 1% of their salary, too!). They then provide a combination of monetary and promotional support to environmental nonprofits like us. 1% also facilitates partnerships between their member businesses and nonprofits to make the biggest impact possible.
