Boyan Slat, founder of The Ocean Cleanup initiative, has dreamed of cleaning plastic from our oceans ever since going scuba diving in Greece at a young age and finding more plastic bags than fish in the sea. The Dutch inventor’s organization developed a tool that aims to remove plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a floating patch of plastic trash between California and Hawaii that is three times the size of France. Slat manages a team of up to 90 people in Rotterdam, but hardly ever goes on expeditions to see his invention in real life because he gets very seasick. After many failed attempts, Slat confirmed to Business Insider that the latest working model, which was introduced in June and includes an attached underwater parachute, looks very promising.
